~Reviewind~ Braid - Use Your Imagination.

Yeahey my first Reviewind - a portmanteau I've created for condensed reviews of older games. Without further ado, here is my review of the critically-acclaimed Braid.

Braid is like your modern day Mario(It even has in-game references to Mario); where instead of stomping on little goombas, you stomp on rather tasty-looking but live Ferrero Rocher chocolates. And did I mention it's a puzzle game? Pardon me if ever the review is slightly vague or isn't as informative as you may find, but Braid is a game that needs to be experienced without any spoilers whatsoever.

Kudos!
Within the beholder: Braid involves a deep and complex story not present in the games majority. The moving and meaningful narrative isn't easy to grasp, yet is very much open to interpretation.

Inside a painting: Delicate visuals draws you in instead of being blissfully distracting.

Sense the aura: Ambient music perfectly sets the pensive mood in this little leprechaun-like wonderland. In two words, serene tranquility.

Radically dynamic puzzle mechanics: The time-manipulation puzzles in Braid allows you to tap into parts of your brain you've never used before. Believe me when I say this. Solutions require inventive thought and a bit of gaming dexterity.

It's a façade: Just like almost everything else in the game, things aren't as they seem. You will not find just a mere platforming puzzle game in Braid, instead you are granted a learning experience...and I can't get any vaguer than that. By the way, you can't die.

It's addicting: You will feel really clever upon solving some of the game's "harder" puzzles, thus compelling you to welcome more challenges.

Groans...
Challenging = understatement: Braid's puzzles are TOUGH. Puzzles vary from "HA! In-your-face-commonsense-easy" to "Wanting-to-throw-this-away-but-I-don't-want-to-feel-stupid-for-not-being-able-beat-this." At times, I was lucky. During desperate times, I concede in having consulted my girlfriend(who remarkably completed the game in two days!).

Baby sometimes luck just ain't enough: Because of the time-rewind ability in and of itself, the game does involve trial & error. Certain puzzles also require impeccable timing and/or inch-perfect jumping for success. That's being cheap and strays away from the game's original intention.

It's addicting: You will feel really stupid for your inability to solve some puzzles - especially when you eventually realize they are stupefyingly easy - thus compelling you to soldier on.

Final thoughts - Because of it's seemingly daunting challenge, Braid is not for everybody; but is worth a taste for anyone wanting to experience an innovation in puzzle gaming. It is a progressive game. One that rewards your accumulated skills and improvement. For Braid, I can proudly say that it's about both the journey and the destination.

Worth it? - You bet! Just don't blame me if your encephalon explodes.
